Dermatitis is a common terminology used to address various types of skin inflammations. In the early stages it is characterized by red, itchy skin but may also result in crusty scales or blisters that ooze liquid in the advanced stages. It is not contagious. Different types and stages of this affection show variations in dosha/ dhatu involvement and hence treatment also varies accordingly.
Types
Contact Dermatitis: In this type of dermatitis pink or red rashes develop on the skin accompanied by severe itching. It is usually caused by contact with irritants that include chemical irritants like soap, detergent, perfumes etc. allergens like pollen, flowers, vegetables, nickel/ cobalt in jewellery etc.
Nummular Dermatitis: This is more common in people of age group 55-65 years. It is common in people who live in a very dry environment or because of taking hot water showers. It is characterized by coin shaped red patches on legs, hands, arms and torso.
Atopic Dermatitis / Eczema: It is characterized by red, itchy, scaly or swollen skin. Blisters also develop in some cases. It is mostly hereditary and is accompanied with asthma, allergies, stress etc.
Seborrhoeic dermatitis: This is more common in the first year of birth or post adolescence and is found on the scalp, face, genitals etc. It is characterized by greasy, yellowish or red scaling.
Statis Dermatitis: It is caused by poor blood circulation and is common in people with congestive heart failure, varicose veins etc. It is more common in middle aged or elderly people.
