Dry skin or xeroderma is caused due to the lack of appropriate amount of water in the most superficial layer of the skin - epidermis. Older people are prone to dry skin rather than young as in elderly people skin tends to have diminished amounts of natural skin oils and lubricants. The areas that are commonly affected by dry skin are arms, hands and particularly lower legs.
Symptoms of dry skin include discomfort from skin tightness, rough dry skin, red plaques, and itching. Usually, the Dry skin may be an entirely invisible skin condition or may cause a fine powder like the appearance of the skin. If untreated it results in a red rash.
